Ralph Ellisons Invisible Man And O. J. Made In America
Race and Opportunity play a grand role connecting the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, and the documentary O.J.: Made in America. Both stories are set within the pit of corruption held throughout the nineties, and display obvious connections between the narratives. The legacy of Orenthal James Simpson is described in this documentary by the currency of events which were occurring during his rise to fame. As for the novel, Invisible Man, various situations during the multiple characters era coincide with the environment of the documentary and show a vast of similarities. Roles such as advancement of success, issues of segregation, and recognition of self-identity are expressed throughout both plots. During the 1960 s, O.J.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦s fame, the world around him was crumbling. The divide between white people and those of color were considerable. There were riots being held all within Los Angeles and so much conflict between the Los Angeles Police Department and black people. As told in the documentary, most white people were extremely oblivious to the happenings of innocent black people and why they protested and rioted during those years. Most of those people who were stuck in the shadows, if asked at this moment what was of the year 1968, would probably just remember the triumphs of Orenthal James Simpson. Inequality was still at its peak in history and those few black athletes who created names for themselves were expected to speak out, but O.J. s opinion of that was to not get involved in political affiliations because his name was to be remembered for his victories and character. Likewise, in Invisible Man segregation was apparent and always associated with the life of the protagonist from the beginning of the novel. This is shown in the quotation: When I got there I discovered that it was on the occasion of the smoker, and I was told that since I was to be there anyway I might as well take part in the battle royal to be fou ght by some of my schoolmates as part of the entertainment (Ellison pg. 17). Humiliation and discrimination played a huge role within this event. Social Media in the Hiring Process Free Essays
A current and somewhat controversial topic regarding the hiring process is employersââ¬â¢ use of social media screening. The most popular sites to be checked are Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter and now more than ever, companies are looking on the Internet to see if applicants are active on these social media websites (Swallow). Harris Interactive conducted a survey of 2,303 respondents from February 9, 2012 through March 2, 2012 to find out how many companies used social media sites to check on job applicants. We will write a custom essay sample on Social Media in the Hiring Process or any similar topic only for you Order Now The results showed that 37 percent of respondents indicated their companies used social media web sites to check on job candidates. Sixty-five percent indicated they were looking to see if a job candidate appeared professional and 51 percent indicated that they were checking to see if the candidate would be a good match in the companyââ¬â¢s culture (ââ¬Å"Social Media A Big Part of Hiring Processâ⬠). Another survey done by a social media monitoring service, Reppler, reveals even higher results. Their study found that over 90 percent of recruiters and hiring managers have visited a potential candidateââ¬â¢s profile on a social network as part of the screening process. The study also shows that 69 percent of recruiters have rejected a candidate based on content found on his or her social networking profiles although 68 percent say that they have actually hired a candidate based on his or her activity on those sites. The most common reasons for rejection include lies about qualifications, inappropriate photos (racy or indicative of drug or alcohol use), negative comments about a previous employer, and poor communication skills. The most common reasons that an employer has hired someone after viewing his or her social media profile include demonstration of a positive personality and good organizational fit, evident creativity, and good references posted by others (Swallow). Although screening social media profiles can provide employers with a wealth of useful information, it also comes with some potential pitfalls. Employers can get in trouble by obtaining information that is unlawful to consider in an employment decision such as an applicantââ¬â¢s race, religion, national origin, age, pregnancy status, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, and gender. In order to decrease the likelihood of a discrimination charge, employers sometimes have a person not involved with the hiring process review social media sites in order to filter out information about inclusion in a protected class (Michale). There are also social media screening services that claim to filter out any information pertaining to a protected class (Sterling Infosystems). As was mentioned earlier, one of the reasons for employers choosing not to hire someone based on their social media profile is inappropriate photos, including those in which alcohol use is shown. Using this as a reason to reject an applicant can put the employer in a sticky situation depending on the particular stateââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"off-dutyâ⬠laws. In over half the states it is unlawful for an employer to take an adverse employment action based on an employeeââ¬â¢s lawful conduct on their own time, even if the employee is only prospective. In ââ¬Å"Using Facebook to Screen Potential Hires Can Get You Sued,â⬠Robert Michale cites Minnesota as an example. In this state it is unlawful for an employer to prohibit a prospective employee from using lawful products such as alcohol and tobacco. So how can applicants protect themselves or best represent themselves within the social media domain? Renee Jackson, a Labor and Employment lawyer with Nixon Peabody LLP, has some advice to give. Jackson recommends that applicants assume that companies are looking for information about applicants online, whether or not itââ¬â¢s true. Another tip is to try displaying ââ¬Å"the most professional online image possible. â⬠In order to get a glimpse of oneââ¬â¢s image, Jackson encourages job seekers to Google themselves and some keywords from their resumes and see what results come up (Quast). Chirag Nangia, CEO of the social media screening service Reppify, offers advice similar to Renee Jacksonââ¬â¢s. Nangia encourages job seekers to try to depict themselves in a manner that would be attractive to the company they want to be a part of. A ZDNet study indicated that British Facebook users are drunk in 76 percent of their photos. It doesnââ¬â¢t take a Human Resources guru to know that this is probably not the best representation of professional behavior (Quast). Finally, a prospective that hasnââ¬â¢t been touched on is that of the applicants. A study presented at the 27th Annual Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference in April 2012 shows that employers that use online screening practices may be ââ¬Å"unattractive or reduce their attractiveness to job applicants and current employees alike. â⬠The study involved 175 students who applied for a fictitious job they believed to be real and were later informed they were screened. Applicants were ââ¬Å"less willing to take a job offer after being screened, perceiving the action to reflect on the organizationââ¬â¢s fairness and treatment of employees based on a post-study questionnaire. They also felt their privacy was invaded. â⬠Works Cited Ahearn, Tom. ââ¬Å"Social Network Screening by Employers May Make Companies Unattractive to Job Applicants. â⬠ESR News: Background Check News from Employment Screening Resources (ESR) Aà ». Incident of Bacchus Marsh Hospital Samples â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Incident of Bacchus Marsh Hospital. Answer: Introduction This assignment will be discussing about an investigation process conducted by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) after a hospital namely The Bacchus Marsh Hospital witnessed unnatural death of babies. This investigation was carried out to review the process occurred in the hospital and the knowledge of the workers about the issue (Teng, 2016). Further, the investigation was reported to the health department of Australia, which further ordered to investigate the process, authority, system and capacity of the healthcare system to understand the critical issues affecting the quality healthcare of that facility. Further, this assignment will point out the findings and will provide recommendations complying with the AHPRA norms regarding the legislation, practice, policies and procedure so that such issue cannot happen in future (Parnis, 2015). Incident and context According to the reports of Spooner (2017), Bacchus Marsh Hospital witnessed unnatural deaths of babies due to which the AHPRA decided to investigate the process of the hospital and find out the reasons behind this. The investigation radius included 40 health practitioners including doctors, nurses and several other health practitioners. Within which, 5 doctors were stopped from serving patients until the investigation process overs. There were 23 practitioners, who were probed while investigation and 17 practitioners were still under investigation (Hamilton Marietti, 2017). The investigation mentioned that 12 health practitioners had worked as healthcare supervisors in their past. According to the findings of AHPRA. 11 of the babies could have been saved using proper interventions. The AHPRA and hospital authority researched several documents; hospital records to find out the interventions applied to those kids and interviewed the healthcare professionals present in the healthcare settings at the time of this incident (Spooner, 2017). Similar incident occurred in the Djerriwarrh health service where almost 10 kids died due to lack of proper healthcare facility. All these healthcare facilities are present in Victoria where the Department of Health and Human Services is useful for the policy, strategy, funding and allocation. However, the lawyer of the patients affected accused that the AHPRA process was slower as the processes of mortality reporting and feedback took time to occur. Review finding While reviewing the process undertaken by the health ministry and AHPRA, it was observed that the authority of hospital and AHPRA took immediate action, so that further risk of the patients could be reduced. Further, the second most important thing that was noticed about the staff was their untrained attitude towards healthcare (Burson, 2015). Furthermore, despite f presence of medical supervisors, the clinical framework of the healthcare facility was such that they were unable to scrutinize and assess the clinical activities in timely manner. Furthermore, while conducting the research of the documents, it was seen that the hospital authority lacked proper perinatal mortality and morbidity review system. The rate of perinatal mortality in the Djerriwarrh healthcare service was higher than any other healthcare facilities in the state (Hamilton Marietti, 2017). The laws and safety standards the Bacchus healthcare facility failed to meet The first standard the Bacchus healthcare facility failed to comply with was the Australian standard for safety and quality. Furthermore, departments like skills and development management, incidents and customer feedback management, determination of patients rights were running under risk factor (Burson, 2015). Secondly, the healthcare facility did not complied with the Victorian healthcare quality and safety standards and did not had any framework to assess the degree to which the Djerriwarrh hospital complied with the standards (Fay Adamson, 2017). Capacity of the department of AHPRA to assess the clinical performance of hospitals While assessing the investigation process, it was understood that the AHPRA had used different online and offline informations to identify the clinical deficiencies present in the process. Further, the process the department chosen to identify the root cause of the issue was according o the Victorian principles of identification of clinical reporting (Teng, 2016). However, the lawyer of the clients who lost their babies accused the authority for being slow in the process of implementation of their audited outcomes. Furthermore, the authority has the capacity to enhance the healthcare practice by providing the training of clinical governance framework so that the officers, who will conduct the investigation, will be able to carry out consistent reporting with responsibility (Alexander, Bogossian New, 2017). Recommendations After completing the assessment and review of the process, there are some recommendations that should be followed by the Djerriwarrh healthcare facility. These are: Each staff of the healthcare facility should be provided with the fetal surveillance education and annually should be evaluated using the Fetal Surveillance Education Program (FSEP) so that those employees can highlight their skills to higher authority. Further, the AHPRA should focus on different interrogative reports and should take necessary steps to understand the Incident Severity Report or ISR so that the organization can understand the clinical interventions that they should apply in their clinical settings. The Djerriwarrh health safety should focus on its relations with the government health and safety organization to provide they staff with training of pediatrics and childcare techniques so that the incidents of child death can be reduced (Parnis, 2015). The Djerriwarrh hospital midwifery andnursing staff should meet every week for a meeting regarding the childcare and intervention they have provided in their respective wards. Further, it will help the organization to keep a record of the clinical activity and outcomes of that week. Furthermore, the healthcare facility and the AHPRA both should make a committee so that they can take necessary steps for the training, development and outcomes of their clinical interventions (Hamilton Marietti, 2017). Conclusion Death of children due to lack in healthcare facilities and untrained healthcare professionals lead to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority to conduct an investigation so that the primary reason for the incident can be assessed. This assignment provides all the information regarding the context and incident, furthermore, provided the feedback regarding the review has also been mentioned. The capacity of the department for assessing the clinical performance and its law and ethics were presented. Finally, a set of recommendations were presented so that the governments regulations can be complied in the hospital systematically. References Alexander, C., Bogossian, F., New, K. (2017). Internal, External and Situational Influences on Consumer Behaviour
The products that will be focused on this assessment will be meat products including poultry, new and/or used passenger cars, property (housing units) and dairy products.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Internal, External and Situational Influences on Consumer Behaviour specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These four product purchases will be assessed for internal, external and situational influences to determine the type of consumer behaviour that accompanies the consumerââ¬â¢s decision process when purchasing any of these products. Purchase one Purchase one is meat and poultry products which are one of the most commonly bought products in the Australia. Based on 2006 statistics, meat and poultry products were the most commonly purchased products for many Australian consumers and the country was also able to export meat and poultry products to countries such as Europe and the United States for a total of $1. 3 billion in exports (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry 2007). The most commonly purchased meat products include beef, red meat, veal, liver and kidney meat and sheep offal. The poultry products that are commonly sold to Australian consumers include chicken breasts, eggs, chicken wings which are available in many of the fast-food restaurants in Australia and boneless chicken products. The average consumption of meat products in Australia averages more than 224 grams a day for each individual consumer while that of poultry products amounts to 200 grams per day (Minchin 2007).Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The internal, external and situational factors are those characteristics that influence or impact the purchasing behaviour of a consumer. The internal factors that affect a consumerââ¬â¢s purchasing behaviour include their personality traits, the ps ychological makeup of the consumer (what they think and feel when selecting products), the type of behaviour they demonstrate when buying products and how consumer motivation affects their decision strategies (East et al. 2008). The external factors that affect the purchasing decision of a consumer include influence from reference groups such as family members, friends, acquaintances and work colleagues, the quality and quantity of the product that is being purchased and the needs assessment of the product where the consumer is motivated to make a purchase decision for a product that will meet their needs (Tanner and Raymond 2010). The internal factors that affect the purchasing behaviour of meat and poultry product consumers include internal stimuli on the part of the consumer where they are compelled to buy meat because of a desire to eat meat products. The main motivation for Australian consumers to purchase meat and poultry products comes out of a desire to satisfy their hunger. Poultry products such as those sold in fast-food restaurants like MacDonaldââ¬â¢s and KFC are mostly bought with the main purpose of meeting the immediate hunger needs of consumers. The external stimulus that affects the purchase of meat and poultry products amongst Australian consumers include recommendations from reference groups who have purchased their meat products from certain supermarkets, meat delis, meat markets or other suppliers of meat products in the country (Lamb et al. 2009). These recommendations help the buyer of the product to determine whether the type of meat products sold in the recommended place will meet their dietary needs and also whether the meat or poultry is sold in a clean and refrigerated environment.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Internal, External and Situational Influences on Consumer Behaviour specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Recommendations also allow the consumer to ascertain whether there are any alternatives to meat or poultry products such as red meat or veal available in the local market. Situational factors are the temporary conditions that affect how buyers behave during the purchase decision-making exercise (Oââ¬â¢Dougherty 2007). Situational factors influence whether the consumer will actually buy a product or not from a retailer and what factors will affect their purchasing decision. The most common situational factors that affect the buying decisions of a consumer include physical factors such as the location of a store, general ambience and environment, social factors such as whether the product is good for the society and time factors such as how long it takes to purchase the product when the product is being purchased by the consumer (Tanner and Raymond 2010). The situational influences that affect the purchasing process of meat and poultry consumers include the physical location of the meat delis or stores as well as the gener al ambience of the store. Stores that are convenient to the buyer with regards to accessibility and are generally clean are likely to influence their purchasing decision when compared to meat delis that are difficult to locate and access and also have dirty refrigerators and unclean floors (Tanner and Raymond 2010). Purchase Two The second purchase that will be assessed to determine the type of consumer behaviour employed by buyers when making their purchases is property or housing units which is a high involvement purchase for most consumers who decide to buy a house. Australia is among top countries in the world that are experiencing a thriving real estate market as many citizens and residents desire to become homeowners. Many Australian cities like Perth, Sydney and Melbourne are experiencing a boom in real estate as well as towns in the rural parts of the country.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More An increasing number of people, both Australian citizens and people living abroad have become increasingly involved in owning their property because homeownership in Australia is a goal for most of these people. Currently, over 70 percent of the population in Australia owns residential property while the rest are tenants pointing to the fact that real estate ownership is an important objective for most Australian citizens and residents. According to the Real Estate Perth Guide (2011), the increase in property acquisition and real estate investment in Australia has been attributed to two factors the first one of which is the growing Australian population seeking to purchase real estate property in many of the urban cities in Australia. These property buyers have begun to realise the importance of investing in the housing market as it is seen as a long term investment. The second factor that has led to an increase in property acquisition in the country is that a notable number of peop le have begun putting their money into real estate property that is related to tourism. Tourism is one of the major economic drivers in Australia and such investments are deemed to yield considerable returns to people who decide to invest in the sector (Real Estate Perth Guide 2011). The internal factors that influence the purchase decision of property buyers include consumer motivation to purchase housing units. As mentioned earlier on in the discussion homeownership is an important goal for most Australian citizens where individuals are motivated to buy their own homes. There is therefore increased consumer motivation to acquire housing units with the single-family residences being the most commonly sought after housing units in the country. Australian residents and citizens are also motivated to purchase their own housing units because of the investment opportunity these purchases present to them. Investing in the housing sector that is involved in tourism guarantees some signifi cant returns to these individuals (Real Estate Perth Guide 2011). The external factors that influence the purchasing decision of real estate property buyers in Australia include family and cultural influences where individuals who have families are influenced to purchase single-family residences so that they can be able to meet the housing needs of their families. The demand for such housing units has continued to increase as more Australians with families seeking to own their own residential houses. Family and cultural backgrounds have, therefore played a major role in home acquisition in the country. Another external factor that affects the consumerââ¬â¢s behaviour when buying property includes the quality of the product that is being purchased. Housing units are of a high quality and they present a significant return on investment to consumers, especially those who have decided to invest in the real estate sector related to tourism. The quality of the product, therefore, plays an important role in influencing the purchase behaviour of the consumer (Lantos 2011). The situational factors that will affect the purchasing decision of housing consumers is the physical factors which according to Tanner and Raymond (2010) affect what type of product the consumer will buy, when they will buy it and how much of it they will buy. Physical factors include the location of the property, the price or cost of purchasing the property and the type of housing that is on sale. Such physical factors will influence the purchasing behaviour of consumers who might, for example, want to buy housing units in the rural or urban areas of Australia or might want to buy apartments instead of single housing units (Hoyer and Macinnis 2010). Purchase Three The third purchase that will be assessed will be new and used cars which are high involvement purchases bought by consumers and buyers. Just like any other country in the world, Australia has a high car purchase rate that has seen man y buyers as young as sixteen years old owning their own cars. The last statistics to be conducted in 1995 on the number of people who owned cars in Australia were able to reveal the number of passenger vehicles registered per 1,000 people which had increased from 250 from the previous year to 465. This increase was mostly attributed to the convenience and flexibility personally owned cars provided to their owners which made buying a car much easier. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the increase in passenger vehicle buyers was also attributed to the ease of accessing employment, education and health services where people who had their own cars were able to engage in these and other activities (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006). Owning a car in Australia is seen to be a necessity rather than a luxury based on the increasing number of people in the country who own cars. People who have their own modes of transportation find it relatively easier to conduct their var ious business and/or personal functions without any form of hassles. This increasing need to have their own personal modes of transportation has contributed greatly to the purchase decision that car buyers go through when deciding to buy a car. Because cars are high involvement purchases, consumers have to evaluate the internal, external and situational factors that will come in to play when deciding to go through with their purchases (Tanner and Raymond 2010). The internal factors that will influence the purchase of either new or used cars will be the type of motivation that a consumer has to buy a new or used car. As highlighted in the previous paragraph car buyers in Australia buy cars for purposes of convenience and flexibility, meaning that the car offers them with an opportunity to accomplish various activities. The motivation of the car buyer to purchase a car will, therefore, depend on either of these factors. Another internal factor will relate to the individual tastes of t he consumer where the consumer will consider which car model and make suits their own personal tastes. The external factors that will affect the consumer decision to buy a car will be the type of lifestyle that exists in Australia which allows for every individual of the family to own a car as long as they are 18 years and over. Holden, which is the main car manufacturer in Australia, has been able to develop various car brands that are meant to suit the various lifestyles and culture of the Australians. Some of the cars produced by Holden Australia include Commodore, Camden, Astra, Holden Monaro Coupe and Chevrolet. The situational factor that will affect the buyer decision to purchase a car will be physical factors where the location of car auto-marts will influence whether a consumer wants to buy a car. The ease with which a potential car buyer locates a Holden store in their vicinity will play a major role in influencing their purchase decisions (Tanner and Raymond 2010). Purcha se Four The fourth purchase to be assessed in the study will be dairy products which, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2004) is the most intensive sector in the country. According to 2001 and 2002 statistics, consumers in the country drank approximately 18 percent of whole milk which was mostly produced in the state of Victoria. 50 percent of the countryââ¬â¢s annual milk production was exported to other foreign countries such as the United States, Asia and Europe while the remaining percentage was sold to manufacturers of butter, cheese, cheddar and other dairy products. 2005-2006 statistics showed that the production of whole milk amounted to 10,092 millimetres while the consumption of whole milk and other dairy products such as cheese, skim milk powder, butter and casein amounted to 527 kt (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry 2007). Victoria is the dominant producer and supplier of milk as it accounts for 61 percent of milk production in the coun try. The states of New South Wales and Queensland both account for 22 percent of the milk supply in the country while Tasmania accounts for 7 percent of milk production and dairy products. The high production of milk and milk products in the country has made dairy products to be easily available to many Australian consumers in the local market regardless of their income levels within the country. Milk and dairy products are, therefore, common purchases for many average consumers in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2004). The internal factors that will affect the consumer buying decision will be the motives of the individual dairy consumer that will be borne out of the desire to purchase dairy products which have been identified as a staple food source in the Western diet. Milk and other dairy products provide consumers with Calcium and other vital nutrients that support bone formation. Consumers might decide to buy dairy products because of this reason as well as the stapl e source of food that these products provide to consumers. The personal tastes of the individual might also determine dairy product purchases where consumers who want to buy high-quality cheese and cheddar are influenced because of their desire for quality products. Consumers who do not have high-quality preferences might decide to purchase the lower value dairy products because they do not attach a particular preference to their purchases (Tanner and Raymond 2010). The external factors that will influence the buyerââ¬â¢s decision to buy milk will be socio-cultural factors whereas mentioned earlier on dairy products are the staple source of food for many westernised countries. The household budget will also affect the consumerââ¬â¢s decision to buy dairy products such as cheese and butter as some brands of these products are manufactured for high-end buyers. The situational factors that will influence the purchase of milk and dairy products will be time factors where the time of day will determine whether a consumer will buy milk. Most dairy products are usually consumed in the morning for breakfast which means that the buyerââ¬â¢s decision to buy milk will be high if they make their purchase decision in the morning. elite african americans essays During the Reconstruction period, congress sent to the states three important new amendments the Constitution. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery, while the Fourteenth Amendment made black citizens, equal to their white counterparts. The fifteenth Amendment states that no citizens could be stopped from voting because of their race or color. There were high spirits and vision of progress among blacks in America. These feelings of joy and happiness lasted shortly when laws were passed that provided for the segregation of southern society into two parts. One for the whites and the other for the blacks. Among the chaos and confusion arisen two black elites in Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. Although both approached the way to deal with oppression and assimilation differently, both enjoyed success in being respected and admired leaders who brought their people one step closer to really becoming free. With the support of Northern missionary societies and a few Southern state governments, they expanded the network of black colleges and institutions into an important educational system Booker T. Washington, born into slavery had worked his own way out of poverty by acquiring an education. He as the founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Once established, he urged other blacks to follow the same road to self-improvement. Washington urged blacks to attend school, learn skills, and establish a strong footing in agriculture and trade. Blacks should refine their speech, improve their dress, and adopt habits of personal hygiene and cleanliness. Only when blacks do all these things will they win the respect of the white citizens. In a famous speech in Georgia in 1895, Washington outlined a philosophy of race relations that became known as the Atlanta Compromise. Washington stated the agitation of questions of racial equality is the extreme folly (Norton 614). He envisioned a society...

Birth Of A Nation 2 Essay Research
Birth Of A Nation 2 Essay, Research Paper D. W. Griffith s heroic poem narrative told in Birth of a Nation was a flooring one. The film set box office records, taking in over 18 million dollars. When it was released, it was one of the longest movies of all time made, over three hours in length. Some movie bookmans say that it is the most of import movie of all time released. But despite all of these records and accomplishments, the narrative and the manner that inkinesss of the South were depicted obsessed inkinesss for decennaries to come. Showing the black adult male as a sexual marauder to white females was ask foring the South commence with wide-scale lynchings of guiltless black work forces. If a black adult male looked the incorrect manner at a white adult female, so he could be lynched without a idea of justness. This movie advanced the intuition and contributed to the pattern of Jim Crow in the South. Most shockingly, I discovered that the movie is still used by the Ku Klux Klan today for enlisting intents. The portraiture of the KKK in Birth of a State was one of heroes, alternatively of marauding racialists. This appealed to white Americans positions of the mythic South, and helped to hike rank in the KKK. Griffith subsequently released a version of the film without the KKK, but the harm had already been done. Of class, the NAACP attacked the movie, and it was met with picketing upon its release. The elevation of the KKK as heroes while portraying black work forces as sexual marauders was disgusting, and it is astonishing to me that the film is praised as it is. Though the portraiture of both inkinesss and the KKK were highly off path, the film itself was an astonishing work of film for its clip. This was likely the first film to utilize 100s of excess in a conflict scene. These scenes were good crafted by the film maker, and while non to the flawlessness of more modern movies such as Braveheart, the engineering and mastermind that the film maker used rival such movies. To th ink that the film was released merely 50 old ages after the terminal of the Civil War makes the effort seem even more unbelievable. In seeing the immense conflicts, I did non necessitate sound to hear the sounds of conflict in my imaginativeness. It would hold been unbelievable if the film had been made in the epoch where sound came into films. The rubric of the movie is an interesting 1. It is unknown whether the rubric refers to the birth of the reunited provinces, or the birth of the Ku Klux Klan. I tend to believe that the movie has a dual significance. In demoing the KKK as good cats, it is obvious that Griffith was seeking to demo their birth as a positive event for the United States. Besides, he was demoing that the U.S. was one time once more reunited after the war, taking to the strengthening of the state. It forebodes the hereafter, when the South and the inkinesss populating there are kept in cheque by the KKK, doing the U.S. that much greater. Though it would be better to disregard this impression of the birth of the KKK, it can non be due to the movie s content, although the movie does demo a genuinely united provinces. The movie is an unbelievable piece of propaganda for both the KKK and the Jim Crow system. Peoples who knew nil about the KKK or thought of them as white scoundrels before Birth of a State likely changed their heads and donned goons of their ain upon seeing the movie. The mainstream image was likely the best advertizement that the KKK could hold had. The vilifying of inkinesss besides led to the Jim Crow system. When it was portrayed in this film as acceptable, people in the South felt much better about making atrocious workss to black citizens, denying inkinesss their civil rights. Birth of a Nation was a powerful movie that was a technological promotion, but it lacked the right historical prospective. Anyone who made such a film now would be branded a racialist and likely would be hung in image in many black communities.

Female Genital Mutilation Essay Example for Free
Female Genital Mutilation Essay `Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and John Stuart Mill all reject ethical relativism, i. e. , the idea that a practice or action is morally right simply because ones society or culture says that it is morally right. Explain how Aristotle, Kant, and Mill would apply their ideas to an ethical criticism of female genital mutilation. Female Genital Mutilation also known as female circumcision is a procedure which is performed on girls before puberty. In this procedure part of or the entire clitoris is removed in order to insure that the female has reduced or no sexual feelings. It is still practiced around the world mostly as a cultural custom rather than a religious one. The reasoning behind this action is that it is done in an effort to make girls into women, that it is the duty of the parents to insure they are circumcised and to ensure that they are eligible for marriage (Religioustolerance. org). In order to consider how Kant, Mills and Aristotle would perceive this procedure we must consider the different social aspects attribute to the writings of each philosopher. According to Kant every single individual possesses the ability to discern right from wrong and that moral of the action should be decided from the intentions of the individual instead of the consequences. Kant also saw the moralistic centre of an action came from duty and not self interest. He also believed that a Maxim becomes universal law only when it is accepted by all men independent of any outside influences or circumstances. He also said that the respect of individuals came from seeing them as an end to themselves which means that infringement on their freedoms is a violation of their rights as individuals. When we apply these considerations to the topic of female genital mutilation we see that this procedure cannot be considered universal law since it is not seen as a rational action in all societies. Additionally it cannot be considered universal law in terms of nature since this procedure interferes with the natural state of the womanââ¬â¢s body. Secondly, though the action may be considered the duty of the parents of the girls whose genitals are mutilated it does not make it morally justifiable since it infringes on the humanitarian rights of the girl. Additionally, the fact that these girls are often circumcised against their will must also be taken into account. It can also be considered that though the girls are circumcised out of duty, the action itself is not unconditional on the part of the parents who see their own self interests in seeing the girl married or being accepted by society instead of what the girl herself wishes. In the case of John Stuart Mills it is apt to apply his principle of Utilitarism in this case. The objective of this principle is that the only consequence that should decide the action to be taken is if it brings the individual the greatest happiness. In the case of female genital mutilation if we consider who the action actually affects we find that three parties are directly involved, the parents of the girl, society and the girl herself. Thus, if we apply Mills theory to this situation then it follows that the genital mutilation of this girl though may bring unhappiness to the girl she will be a source of happiness for society and her parents. In effect it would bring society joy since it has one more woman who is considered eligible for marriage and the parents would be happy since their daughter is considered a part of society. In effect the unhappiness of the girl and the pain associated with this procedure is not taken into account since the decision on a broader level brings the most happiness to the most individuals if the procedure is carried out. On an individual level however John Millsââ¬â¢s teachings work against it. If we consider Aristotle, it is prudent to recall one his greatest teachings, that every part of the body be it the foot or the head or even the vagina serves a particular function in the body and that the goodness of that function lays within it. In effect if we consider the fact that female genital mutilation can impair not only the sexual pleasure of women, giving those problems in excretion and also childbirth. Then it stands to reason that Aristotle sees the goodness within that organ to be lost to the body if this procedure is carried out. Aristotle also saw that the separate functions of the body like those of society served to make an individual whole, if any of those functions are disrupted then the whole individual is disrupted as well. Though indirect it can be seen that all three philosophers were against the concept of Female Genital Mutilation. In their teachings we can find the moral and logical center required to finally leave behind this ancient and unnecessary tradition. Works Cited Religioustolerance. org. Social Workers in Mental Health Facilities and Outpatient Clinics Essa
When thinking about social work, there are different avenues that a worker can explore in this vast field. Because a social workers job is multifaceted, workers can not only integrate themselves in an already created avenue, but can also tailor a field, specifically for a need in the community. Looking at the many different fields in the area of social work, the area of Social Workers in Mental Health facilities and outpatient clinics stands out as an area of depth and interest. This field is important because it allows social workers to play an integral part in assisting patients, some of who have been kept in large inpatient facilities for vast periods of time, to become functioning and active members of society, as they deal with the task of managing their particular mental illness. It is stated on the NASW occupation profile that "Social workers employed with mental health clinics can have a range of job functions depending on their specific roles. Possible job titles include, but are not limited to, clinical social worker, licensed clinical social worker, mental health specialist, clinician, therapist, counselor, director or case manager (NASW p.2)." In 1963, The Community Mental Health Act came into existence. This act was created to provide federal funding for community mental health centers in the United States. The CMHA gave money to states, in order for them to create local mental health centers. These health centers would be spearheaded by the National Institute of Mental Health. The purpose of the CMHA was to provide community-based care, as an alternative to institutionalization, which previously was the most popular and expensive answer to assisting those with mental illness. These different clinics and faci... ...se, and to learn how to utilize non traditional methods to achieve a therapeutic accomplishment with patients. The educational requirements to work in this particular field are geared to not only be a help to patients struggling with adjusting, but a therapeutic help as well. Heineken and it pure crystal, and vibrant green experience is accompanied by music festival sponsored by time, sports competition in the world the pursuit of personality, the pursuit of fashion life sharing. Without doubt, Carlsberg and Heineken are all typical brands which is worth doing some study. This paper just discussed and analyzed the two brands and gave some proposals for other brands. The Analysis of Carlsberg and Heineken Information gathered from research carried out tells us that Carlsberg and Heineken have done an extremely good job in the promotion of its product below is a list of the facts learnt. The Current Situation of Carlsberg Market segmentation With the development of economy, high-grade consumer place function, tend to be diversified, many people put the business talks, Private party, emotional communication was moved to western restaurant or bar, this to high-grade beer puts forward more requirements. People need some cultural connotation of different beer. And Heineken beer no matter in cultural connotation, but also is alcohol content, taste, quality, and even packing are just cater to these needs. ââ¬Å"Heinekenâ⬠this international top brands has seemed as if the bar culture. Target market Enter Chinaââ¬â¢s Heineken beer positioning in high-grade beer market, target consumption group is medium and high income levels and white-collar, it must be a very clear, very targeted. Although Heineken beer target market clear, will sights high income people, but also is not invariable, especially in young consumption group training. Heineken beer consciousness to the young generation of beer consumption ability in raising, in order to prevent brand aging, young people market naturally become Heineken main battlefield: should close to younger customers, also cannot distance love to drink beer middle-aged, because the latter is Heineken companyââ¬â¢s core customer, and the former is the core of future customers. Market position While entered the Chinese market, Heineken beer is targeting high-end consumption market, so in the short term to build a wide range of distribution system is almost impossible, this requires the accurate market positioning. Because a lot of business activities and this kind of target customers a chance to learn about Heineken brand, prompting them to choose Heineken brand products. They not only have the demand of high-grade beer, can also for high quality, high-grade beer pay higher price. So from the south China area in, relatively easy to open the situation, and the south China region has good transport system, which is not easy to transport of beer products is very important. The Current Situation of Heineken In China, also avoid the public carlsberg beer market fierce positive competition, will be 18 to 30 years of age crowd again segmentation, with personalized marketing means to meet the young group is more exquisite and needs. Carlsberg will fashionable breath, friends sharing spirit, experience Franceââ¬â¢s new fashion and so on to the different needs of the Chinese consumers. No matter whether the young group market segments of digging, or the super high-end market strategy layout, carlsberg through a successful single products, the realization of the qualitative change of every little makes a mickle. Proposals for the Two Brands The summary of my research analysis is that current promotional methods are good for Carlsberg and Heineken and have been very effective over the past years but I believe that there are some changes which can be made that will improve the profit of the company and increase customer loyalty. Below areà my proposals: (1)to ensure that the quality of product, set up the high quality brand image Quality is the life of the brand, consumer demand for the quality of the products is the most basic demand on brand demand, strengthen product quality management, and constantly improve the quality of the products of consumer satisfaction is the premise and foundation of successful brand. Beer enterprise must further research target market target consumption group on brand quality and taste to unrael the, and accordingly improve and perfect the quality of beer, set up the high quality of beer brand image. (2) pay attention to product packaging design Due to the characteristics of beer consumption, the product homogeneity is higher, consumer spending more take a fancy to beer character and value, thus packing become beer brand personality and value propaganda means and tools. (3) to do advertising As the AD displayed to the full product performance, properties, appearance, packaging, etc., increase the consumer brand cognition, through advertising, can quicken brand communication, promote brand awareness and establish brand image.

Is God Responsible for Evil in the World? Essay
For thousands of years already the adepts of the three worldââ¬â¢s most widespread monotheistic religions, which are Christianity, Islam and Judaism, have been arguing for whether their deity is responsible for all the evil that happens in our world. Numerous books were written on this issue, and lots of disputes took place worldwide, but the answer hadnââ¬â¢t been found that would satisfy both the followers of those religions and their opponents. The believers deny the assumption that their omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient God is also the creator of evil, while atheists use it as the main argument in proving the ridiculousness of religious beliefs. Lots of philosophers, politicians and theologians have devoted their works to the research of this issue. Moojan Moman in his book The Phenomenon of Religion writes: ââ¬Å"the presence of evil and suffering in the world has even been argued by some philosophers from Epicurus (341-270bce) to David Hume (1711-76ce) to cast doubt on the existence of God. Other more modern writers such as Freud and Marx sought to show that religionââ¬â¢s explanations of the presence of evil and suffering were based on delusionâ⬠[1] à à à à à à à à à à à The adepts of monotheistic religions reject this hypothesis because it conflicts with their statement that the God loves all of his creations. In the notion of most people itââ¬â¢s impossible to love someone deeply, and, in the same time, to make him or her suffer. Thus, the explanation of the existence of evil in the world for the common believers is that the deity granted free will and a right to choose to all of his creations, and if people choose to commit wrong and evil deeds, itââ¬â¢s not his fault. But here a question arises whichââ¬â¢s why the omnipotent deity does nothing to stop the doings that hurt the creatures he loves so much. à à à à à à à à à à à Other religious leaders explain that all the evil in the world happens because God wants to temp his adepts, or to give them a chance to become stronger through the trials he sends them. But if we look at this question from that viewpoint, therefore the kind nature of the deity would again be questioned, as a ââ¬Å"loving fatherâ⬠, as the believers sometimes call their worshipped deity, wouldnââ¬â¢t have made his beloved children suffer to prove their faithfulness and devotion to him, or to help them develop some of the positive moral qualities and values. Itââ¬â¢s obvious that a loving and caring ââ¬Ëparentââ¬â¢ wouldââ¬â¢ve given his children careful guidance to make them better. The Christians and Jewish also prefer to omit the fact that the superior creature, their God presumably is, wouldnââ¬â¢t have behaved himself as a capricious child, demanding Abrahamââ¬â¢s son Isaac to be sacrificed to him in order to prove Abrahamââ¬â¢s devotion. à à à à à à à à à à à Christians disagree with the statement that God, whoââ¬â¢s a creator of all life in the Earth, is also the one whoââ¬â¢s ultimately responsible for the evil that takes place in the world, even though numerous verses from the Bible, their sacred text give the evidence to support this claim, like the ones given below: Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? (Amos 3:6)[2] I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live. And I polluted them in their own giftsâ⬠¦( Ezekiel 20:25,26)[3] Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you. (Jeremiah 18:11)[4], and, finally: I make peace and create evil. I the Lord do all these things. ( Isaiah 45:7)[5] Thus itââ¬â¢s obvious that itââ¬â¢s the deity the Christians worship who created the evil that exists in the world, and itââ¬â¢s clearly written in their sacred text. Unfortunately, this fact doesnââ¬â¢t fit into the concept of kind and forgiving God the Christian theologians and church leaders have been creating throughout the ages, thatââ¬â¢s why the theologians try to interpret this verses as the mistakes done by the numerous translators of the Bible, arguing over the meanings of the initial world that is translated as ââ¬Ëevilââ¬â¢ in most of the existing copies of Bible worldwide. The Muslimââ¬â¢s have a viewpoint on the purpose of the humanââ¬â¢s existence on this earth different from the one the Christians and Jewish hold, which dictates the differences in their understandings of God. For Muslims this world is a kind of a test center, the place where all the actions and thoughts of every man are evaluated by the superior creature, and the humans are rewarded or punished depending of their balance of their things and right doings. For them the God is not a merciful and loving father, but a strict and demanding judge who knows about every their action and thought. Regardless of the differences in interpreting the sense of life by the Muslims, Christians and Jewish, Muslims also prove that their deity isnââ¬â¢t the one responsible for the wrongdoings in the world. They prove that the God had granted his creations with the right to choose between the evil and good, and, moreover, itââ¬â¢s the sole purpose of their life on the earth. He is capable of stopping all the wrongdoings, but he doesnââ¬â¢t do it, as he needs them to later judge the people who committed them. Nadir Aqeel, the author of the Frequently asked questions regarding Determinism and Free Will, the article found on the Understanding Islam Website, draws the analogy with the examination hall, where the God is the supervisor. Passing near the student, the supervisor sees the student writes down an incorrect question. Itââ¬â¢s obvious that the supervisor shouldnââ¬â¢t correct the mistake, as this will defeat the very purpose of the examination.[6]à But, in the same time the Quoran says that nothing happens without the Allahââ¬â¢s permission in this world, thus he permits all the evil to exist in the world. In the law system of most countries the non-acting while knowing that a crime takes place is punished, and the person who didnââ¬â¢t do anything to prevent the wrongdoing is considered to be guilty partially for the crime that took place. The adepts of Islam may, of course, say, that we shouldnââ¬â¢t judge the superior creature with our laws, but itââ¬â¢s obvious that the human laws are the only ones we have, itââ¬â¢s our only instrument we can use to evaluate the rightness or wrongness of any deed. The basic difference between the Christianity and Judaism is that Christians believe that the human being is born in a state of sin, while the Jews believe the child is born pure, and itââ¬â¢s a matter of choice for whether to dirty yourself with the wrong actions and doings or to stay pure and in harmony with the surrounding world. Different branches of Judaism, the same as of Christianity or Islam, have different views on God and his role in the existence of evil and sin on our planet. For example, Reconstructionist Jews, as Emanuel S. Goldsmith states in his article Kaplanââ¬â¢s Contemporary Religious Relevance: A Review of Reconstructionist Philosophy and Theology, that: ââ¬Å"God is the Energy enabling us to conquer fear and despair, alienation and loneliness. God is what infuses our lives with confidence, courage and meaningfulness. God is life with a capital ââ¬Å"Lâ⬠and goodness with a capital ââ¬Å"G.â⬠[7] The other Jews personalize God, but they also believe he is not the one responsible for the wrongdoings and evil that exists in the world. They state God had given his creations free will, and itââ¬â¢s the matter of their choice whether to dirty themselves with the wrongdoings, or to stay clean in the eyes of God, be in harmony with the surrounding world, and make the Messianic Era closer, as the Jews believe Messiah will come to the world when itââ¬â¢ll become perfect. The Holocaust has provoked and still arouses numerous discussions about the origins of sin and evil, and about the reasons of their appearance. Some Jews believe, that Holocaust was provoked by the sins of the Jewish nation, thus admitting that, in their opinion, god had chosen to punish his chosen nation by murdering from six to seven millions of them by the arms of Nazi. Of course, most Jewish do not share this viewpoint, as they do not want to see claim their God is a mass murderer. As weââ¬â¢ve seen, neither of the researched monotheistic religion supports the viewpoint that God is responsible for the evil in the world. The Jewish, Christians and Muslims hold the belief that evil and wrongdoings is the result of the right to choose, the God had granted to his creations. They also prove that God sends people sufferings and hardships to help them become stronger and better. Most of the believers also choose to ignore the fact that if the God created everything, our world, the whole universe, itââ¬â¢s logical that evil is also a product of his creation. Some adepts may contradict to it saying, that this is Lucifer who created evil, but most religious leaders claim thatà God is the only one whoââ¬â¢s got power to create anything as formidable. But, using elementary logic we can see, that if the God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, he: Knows when and where an evil deed will take or takes place Doesnââ¬â¢t do anything to prevent it. à à à à à à Thus, according to the law system used by the most countries in the world, heââ¬â¢s guilty of non-acting, of allowing the crime to take place, regardless of the fact that it often hearts the innocent. à à à à à à à à à à à The researched monotheistic religions choose to ignore this fact, or try to invent numerous explanations for it, because it contradicts to their conception of the righteous and kind deity, that holds the humanity as his beloved children. Geography and History of Kashmir
Geography and History of Kashmir Kashmir is a region located in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. It includes the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the Pakistani states of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. The Chinese regions of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram are also included in Kashmir. Currently, the United Nations refers to this region as Jammu and Kashmir. Until the 19th century, Kashmir geographically included the valley region from the Himalayas to the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today, however, it has been extended to include the aforementioned areas. Kashmir is significant to geographic studies because its status is disputed, which often causes conflict to develop in the region. Today, Kashmir is administered by India, Pakistan and China. Historical Facts About Kashmir Historical documents state that the region of present-day Kashmir was formerly a lake, thus its name is derived from several translations that deal with water. Kaashmir, a term used in the religious text Nilamata Purana, means for example a land desiccated from water. Kashmirs old capital, Shrinagari, was first founded by the Buddhist emperor Ashoka and the region served as a center of Buddhism. In the 9th century, Hinduism was introduced to the area and both religions thrived. In the 14th century, the Mongol ruler, Dulucha invaded the Kashmir region. This ended the Hindu and Buddhist rule of the area and in 1339, Shah Mir Swati became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir. Throughout the rest of the 14th century and into subsequent times, Muslim dynasties and empires successfully controlled the Kashmir region. By the 19th century, though, Kashmir was passed to the Sikh armies that were conquering the area. Beginning in 1947 at the end of Englands rule of India, the Kashmir region was given the choice to become a part of the new Union of India, the Dominion of Pakistan or to remain independent. Around this same time, however, both Pakistan and India attempted to gain control of the area and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 began which lasted until 1948 when the region was partitioned. Two more wars over Kashmir took place in 1965 and 1999. Todays Geography of Kashmir Today, Kashmir is divided among Pakistan, India and China. Pakistan controls the northwestern part, while India controls the central and southern portions and China controls its northeastern areas. India controls the largest portion of land at 39,127 square miles (101,338 sq km) while Pakistan controls an area of 33,145 square miles (85,846 sq km) and China 14,500 square miles (37,555 sq km). The Kashmir region has a total area of about 86,772 square miles (224,739 sq km) and much of it is undeveloped and dominated by large mountain ranges such as the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. The Vale of Kashmir is located between mountain ranges and there are also several large rivers in the region. The most populated areas are Jammu and Azad Kashmir. The main cities in Kashmir are Mirpur, Dadayal, Kotli, Bhimber Jammu, Muzaffrarabad and Rawalakot. The Historical Development of the Electric Train Essay
The Historical Development of the Electric Train - Essay Example Electricity is used as a substitute to provide power hence eliminating smoke and taking advantage of the high efficiency of electric motors. This paper seeks to describe the historical development of the electric train in the world of technology. In 1879, Werner von Siemens who was a German engineer presented the first practical passenger train at Berlin which used electricity to operate. In the same year, the first electric railway was demonstrated at the Berlin Trades Fair. The locomotive was driven by approximately a power of 2.2 KW series wound motor and the train which consisted of the locomotive and three cars. This locomotive could reach a maximum speed of 13 km/h. In 1881, the worldââ¬â¢s first public electric tram line was opened in Berlin, Germany, and it was named Gross- Lichterfelde Tramway. It was built by Werner von Siemens. In 1883, Modling and Hinterbruh Tram opened near Vienna in Austria as the first electric tram line. This tramline used electricity served from a n overhead line to operate. Also in 1883, Volkââ¬â¢s electric railway was opened in Brighton, Britain. ... This line opened in 1890, using electric locomotives which were built by Mather and Platt. In fact, electricity grew quickly and became the power supply of choice for subways, which were assisted by the Spragueââ¬â¢s invention of the multi- unit train control in the year 1897. The surface and the elevated transit systems used steam until they were forced to convert by the law. The first and foremost electrification on the mainline was actually on a four- mile stretch of the Baltimore Belt Line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) in 1895. This track was very crucial in connecting the main portion of the B&O to the newly built line to the New York and it required a series if tunnels around the edges of Baltimoreââ¬â¢s downtown. Smoke from steam locomotives was becoming a nuisance on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Railroad entrances to New York City required tunnels and hence smoke problems were becoming worse. A collision in the Park Avenue tunnel in 1902 led to the New York Sta te legislature to outlaw the using of smoke producing locomotives after 1908. Consequently, electric locomotives began to operate in 1904 in the New York central Railroad. In 1930s, the Pennsylvania Railroad, which had actually introduced the use of electric locomotives because of the law, electrified its entire territory east of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Chicago, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad which was the last transcontinental line to be built, electrified the lines across the Rocky Mountains and to the Pacific Ocean beginning in 1915. The East Coast lines such as the Virginia Railway, the Norfolk and the Western Railway found it useful to electrify short sections of the mountain crossings.

Strategic management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1
Strategic management - Essay Example The lower correlation value of securities in portfolio means lower list. Correlation can vary between -1 to +1. ï ²(Ri, RM) denotes the correlation between the returns on security i and the returns on the market portfolio; ï ³(Ri) denotes the standard deviation of the returns on security i, E(RM) denotes the expected return on the market portfolio; ï ³(RM) denotes the standard deviation of the returns on the market portfolio; and RF denotes the risk-free rate of return. (c) Write down an expression for the security market line. Draw a sketch of the security market line, and indicate the positions of securities A and B on this line. Explain briefly how you would interpret the security market line. The risk free rate of returns is 4%. Beyond that, the higher the risk, higher the returns. In the above Security Market Line, Security A gives 4.5% returns at 10% risk. Security B gives 5.2% returns at 20% risk. The slope of the security market line is the risk(B-Beta). (d) Write down expressions for the characteristic lines for securities A and B. Draw sketches of the characteristic lines for securities A and B. Explain briefly how you would interpret the characteristic lines. The systematic risk is common for all the securities in the market. So, the systematic risk is common for the securities A and C too. The unsystematic risk is unique to each and every security. The risk of Securities A and C are 6% and 11% respectively. The systematic risk has to be less than 6%. Assuming that systematic risk is x %, the unsystematic risk for security A would be 6%-x% and for Security C would be 11%-x%. Since 11%-x% would be greater than 6%-x%, the Security C has higher risk compared to Security A. Roll questioned whether it is even conceptually possible to test the CAPM. Roll showed that the linear relationship which prior researchers had observed in graphs
